Mississippi Cultural Crossroads Pieces & Strings Quilt Exhibit Featured at Mississippi Museum of Art
Located in downtown Port Gibson—at the intersection of past and future—Mississippi Cultural Crossroads is not unlike the quilts displayed on its walls: a rich panorama of artful connections, combining what is useful with what is beautiful. Over the years, the Center has been home to variety of activities, and today hosts after-school art programs and continues its vital oral history project, “I Ain’t Lying.” But the Cultural Crossroads may be best known as the headquarters of the Crossroads Quilters, a group of quilting artisans who have earned state and national accolades for their textile masterpieces—work that preserves valuable traditions even as it creates educational and economic opportunities. Along with two quilters on staff, this loosely organized volunteer group has created works of art that have been exhibited as far away as Bejing, China. “Closer to Home” the winning quilt in the annual Pieces and Strings quilting contest (marking its 24th year in 2012) is hung at the Mississippi Museum of Art each year. The Crossroad’s Environmental Reading Garden is another example of the beautifully utilitarian: A lovely spot to read and meditate, it’s also an inviting venue for weddings and other social events.
